Artist's
Bio
Kathy Colt is a textile
artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. She has conducted an independent study of textile processes, particularly surface
design on cloth, for the past 18 years. While doing elective work in her final year of landscape architectural study,
Kathy was introduced to dyes, dyeing and mechanical resists, and became a dedicated student of textile arts. Since then,
her interests have led to the exploration of a variety of textile print and resist processes, as well as laminated felting,
for wearable applications. Laminated felting (also known as "nuno felt" and "nuno rusca") has been
the focus of her practice in recent years. Of the many influences that flow into Kathy's work, the surfaces, details
and history of both natural and human-formed landscapes are among the most significant. Kathy increasingly seeks a fusion
of these streams of influence, along with various textile techniques, to create innovative wearable and sculptural structures.
About Mariposa Artisan Textiles In 2006,
Kathy formally launched an artwear project under the "Mariposa Artisan Textiles" label. As a symbol
of transformation, Mariposa (the butterfly) is the constant dreaming, making, and releasing that have made this work
what it is. Currently, Mariposa Artisan Textiles is reentering "cocoon phase". What will emerge
on the other side, we cannot say - all one can know for sure is that it will continue to evolve and change....
